Is it bad when firms stop taking new cases?

Many firms come to a point in time where they realize the have to stop taking new cases.

Most business owners and experts will agree this is really bad. The truth is, it depends.

There could be a myriad of reasons why a firm decides to stop taking cases temporarily, from health, and family to not having the team to help with the caseload.

While it might not fully be a bad thing in some occasions, the reality stays the same.

The reality is that you are running a business that pays for your livelihood and that of your staff. Not taking cases means no new money coming through your door and that leads to whole new set of issues.

Before you decide to stop taking new cases, ask yourself what solutions are available? Is it to have your team work extra hours, hire more staff, look for extra help on a temporary basis, or maybe you don’t have the capacity to hire a full-time staff but you could get help on a per-project basis?

The most successful firms never turn away business, they invest to support it.

Let’s start with the basics. Get to know your firm and where it stands. Know your numbers.

Here are some great starting points:

  • How many consults are you scheduling a month?
  • How many consults retained your services?
  • How many cases do you have open in active status per month?
  • How many cases have you completed and filed per month?
  • How many cases have you closed that month?

Next, decide your best course of action.

  • Is my team managing their caseload effectively?
  • Is there room for better internal procedures?
  • Could we provide a better service to our clients?
  • Are we missing out on taking more cases?
  • Could we use some help?

Now, it’s time to put that solution to work.

Having more helping hands working on your caseload is a great way to stop turning business away. That said, spending time and resources in training unskilled staff that can jeopardize your firm’s reputation is not the solution either.

Consider hiring skilled US-based immigration paralegals to work on your caseload. Our team will take your case from start to finish and follow up with your clients in the best way possible.
